the only reason naruto didn't kill sasuke in the lake is because naruto was only aiming to scratch sasuke's headband while sasuke was aiming to kill naruto. All naruto wanted to do was prove he was equal to sasuke thats why naruto didnt kill sasuke. Also naruto has the 9 tailed fox in him and can destroy sasuke at 4-tail.
i agree naruto can beat sasuke. i doubt he can in shippuden though. only with 4 or more tails can naruto beat sasuke in shippuden.

Naruto is more powerful. The whole reason Sasuke left to begin with is because Naruto surpassed him and he was jealous. He teamed with Orochimaru out of spite, feeling he would never be a match for Itachi if Naruto was stronger than him.
Naruto could've completely obliterated Sasuke in the valley of the end, but was not aiming to kill. He merely fought to neutralize Sasuke and bring him back to the village. Sasuke took advantage of Naruto's compassion and defeated him, choosing to defect to Orochimaru instead.
