I actually have not seen too much anime, but my all time favorite for 2 years now is Samurai Champloo. What got me into anime/manga was really Fullmetal Alchemist and Hayao Miyazaki movies (like Spirited Away my all time favorite and Castle in the Sky). So if you haven't seen any of these yet, I'd definitely reccommend them. I'd also have to say Death Note as well. I'm watching the anime now since it's on tv, but I've read about half way through the manga and really liked it.
