The show that you are referring to is Escaflowne or The Vision of Escaflowne. It's a pretty old show (not as old as Dragonball though), but you can download the torrent if you want to see all 26 episodes.
There's also a movie out too.

I think ur talkin 'bout Escaflowne (or Vision of Escalfowne)..I'm not sure whether its the movie or series though
It has a giant robot thingy but its not gundam..and Van has wings and Merle is a jealous cat girl...it all fits so I hope this is it
