While many comic book creators, be they artists, writers, or both, are not millionaires, quite a few are doing well financially. Not all, mind you, but there are plenty of other big named artists and writers, such as Brian K. Vaughn, John Byrne, Marc Silvestri, etc., who are not only doing well for themselves, but have other projects and companies. DC has signed on quite a number of writers and artists lately, and offered lucrative contracts to them. Not every writer or artist is going to be a millionaire by making comics, however. If you create something really successful, like Stan Lee did with Marvel, or Todd McFarlane did with Spawn and Image Comics, then the money will be there. All in all, making millions in the comic book industry happens, but the percentage is limited.

They haven't just written comics. Stan drove those comics from day one and the rights for a dozen big budget movies have been spawned (pun - ok, he didn't create 'spawn') from it. Everytime superman gets used for something new - a poster, a film, a cartoon, Stan, in theory could get paid for it.
Umm...for the other answer, Superman was not created by Stan Lee.
The other comic writers probably are millionaires, they just don't show it.
Stan Lee was the original creator of XMen, Spiderman, Hulk, etc. If you notice these are 'hits', and have been for a while. I don't remember all they created, but if there's been movies, they have been well marketed and thats why they're millonaires. It takes a lot, not just some fans digging your character, or your comic. Others need 'connections'.
