I agree. Gary Oak is definitely a better match for Ash.
They both started out in the same town and from there on, each expanded with different battling strategies - Ash's being more brash while Gary thought things through. Rivals that think before they act are better competition. That way, anytime Ash actually won, it was a victory that was worthwhile.
I think the best rival for Ash would be Gary, because I allways like the Kanto Series. I think that the older Pokemon was alot better than the newer one.
I will always say that Gary Oak is Ash's best rival.
