I'm so confused about Kingdom Hearts!?!
Question: I've played Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 and read the manga books for Chain of Memories, but I still have no idea who some of the characters are! Who is DIX, Xehanort, Ansem, and Xemnas? What is Riku after? What are Nobodies, and Heartsless? How do you get turned ito a Nobody or Heartless? And how are they both made? And anything else that you think could help me understand!

Okay, if you have finished KH2, then I will tell you the storyline.
As you may have read from the Secret Ansem Reports, Ansem the Wise (otherwise known as DIZ, which stands for Darkness In Zero) took in a man who was appeared that he was about to die named Xehanort. Ansem lived in Hollow Bastion. He fed him, took care of him. It appeared however, that Xehanort had no memory of anything that happened in the past (there may be a connection to the old man from the secret ending, in fact, in a recent picture for a new game that will be coming out titled Birth By Sleep for the PSP, the old man is referred to as Master Xehanort). Okay, so now that you know that lets move on to some other issues.
At that time, Ansem was conducting research on the heart and its effect on things. He eventually came across in his findings something called The Heart Of All Worlds. While conducting his research, he had Xehanort help him along with 5 other people (these people's nobodies later became the leaders of the organization numbered 1-6 with Xemnas at #1). After Ansem found out about the Heart Of All Worlds, he was visited by King Mickey who told him to stop all of his research and said it would be unwise to go further.
Okay, here is where things go badly, Xehanort, who had been following his master's orders is told by Ansem that the experiments are to be abolished and that the laboratory along with the underground passage is to be sealed away forever. The final room in the underground passage is called the Room Of Sleep (seen in a Final Mix+ scene, this room is believed to be where Xehanort recovered originally, it is also where Aqua's, the blue haired girl from the secret ending, armor is discovered to be).
Xemnas refuses Ansem's demand, and secretly tests himself and the other organization members after discovering another passage way underground where he supposedly unlocked a door to the world (revealed in Final Mix, the new area, and new scenes).
They all accidentally (supposedly it was an accident, I believe anyway) turn into nobodies and into heartless. Only Xehanort's Heartless keeps human form and wanders from Ansem's lab in Hollow Bastion. They all turn into Nobodies also, all keeping their human form. Together the collaborate and cast Ansem into the World Of Darkness. Xehanort's nobody then takes Ansem's name.
From now on Xehanort's nobody and Heartless both take on the name Ansem. DIZ (the real Ansem comes back from the World of Darkness by acquiring and using the Power of Darkness but doesn't reveal himself to be the real Ansem until the world, The World That Never Was).
Heartless are created when the darkness in one's heart becomes beyond overpowering and most of the time is attacked by a heartless. Although there are some exceptions, like when Sora plunged the dark keyblade into his body releasing his and Kairi's heart turning Sora into a heartless.
Nobodies are created when the shell of the body taken by the heartless starts to move by itself, according to the game. Most of the time, nobodies just act based on instinct, except for the Organization XIII members, and Namine.
The only reason that Riku never turned into a heartless was because he learned to control his dark power and the fact that he was never actually attacked by heartless is another important matter. Throughout all of KH1, Riku was deceived by Maleficent. And Ansem (Xehanort's heartless) near the end also took control over his body, but Riku retained his heart to himself, therefore he never turned into a heartless. Also, it might have something to do with Riku being the true keyblade master as revealed in the first game at Hollow Bastion.
Chain of Memories is book 2. You need to read the regular Kingdom Hearts manga first.

hmm its been awhile but ok
- heart less are the result of people who lose their hearts (due to various reasons) they are the same person just .... i guess mindless or in a trance. i guess you can call them the soul of the person gone bad
- for every heartless there is a nobody nobodys are the empty shells of the person who had their hearts removed/taken away
-ansem is a scientist who used to study the way the heart works
-he had this scintist assistant xenort now xenrt he dissobeaded anesam and did something that made him lose his heart (srry i dont rember what)
- dix is ansems code name ... for some reason he didnt want anyone to know who he was so he disised himself and called himself dix
-... riku.... in the first game his motives were to save kari at any cost so he gives his body to the heartless and a heartless takes over.... in the second game he is liveing in shame ... i think he also wanted to be back to normal.. i dont think hes evil or any thing
