He mentioned that he always was fascinated by bees, by how they live, and make honey, go to flowers and construct a beehive.
That, and because he wanted to make something that his kids will laugh and approve.;)

I think its because he has young children of his own. Probably wanted to do something they would like to watch instead of repeats on television.
Age appropriate instead of old shows.
He just felt like doing something that he hadn't done before and seeing how it turned out.
