I've always thought of Supes as the a gay or jewish (or perhaps both!) icon.

He was invented by a Jewish writer and, as Thomas G pointed out earlier, there are very strong immigrant tones in there. Super-man as messiah anyone?
I absolutely adore the way Alex Ross paints Supes. Now there you get a middle aged fatherly authority figure.
I only read "All-Star Superman" regularly these days. BUT, I am checking out "Action Comics" for as long as Gary Frank is the artist. I think Superman is OK, but he can get stale real fast...
i did, like the films, but sadly christopher reeve died, he was brillint playing this role.
i do though i prefer smallville if that counts as it was based of when he was younger
