it's more comedy for me though, but it has action and adventure, it's action actually, the humour is great!
bleach and naruto equaly
I guess you may already have watched 'Evangelion' but it is fun although it gets a bit bizarre by the end.
Virus (Buster Serge) is another mecha/action thing with a fair bit of humour.
I have started to watch Rurouni Kenshin as this is in many top 5 lists. It's not strictly 'action' but as it's about a wandering samurai you do get sword fights.
there's lots of action in 'Sailor Moon' in fact - it's girly but it's a classic that got me (and others) into anime - I'd reccommend the 3rd series SAILOR MOON S and that you watch a subbed version (the dubs do change the tone a lot).

Im gonna have to say..... Naruto, Bleach, Kenshin, Gundam seed and gundam seed destiny, full metal alchemist, eureka 7 looked good to and some nice fights.
Bleach and naruto will probably be the best to watch though. They ahve the best fights, the ebst storylines, they both look good, the characters are great, both have alot of things that make them great where other animes lack.

I love Hunter X Hunter above all other action anime, it focuses on the tactics and strategies of the characters, it's great!
