If I'm making a Naruto charrie of my own...?!
Question: are there any things I should NOT do, or whatever? I know there's the typical "no insanely powerful characters" thing... and that's it. Any pointers?

Uhm....
1. He / she must not be related DIRECTLY to any of the Naruto's characters. For unmentioned characters like Naruto's mother, Sakura's parents and some other people, this is forgiven. However, don't make him / her "sister of the Uchiha siblings". This contradicts the real fact given by both manga and anime and therefore, is WRONG.
2. For characters replacing the "unmentioned characters", make sure you have done enough research for it. Since most people's parents are not even shown (like Lee and Tenten's parents), you can make the appearances, names and personalities up. For some who at least have the name and how he / she looked like, e.g. Naruto's mother, make up a character based on the fact given by the manga. Exact facts can be obtained through manga chapters, since they are the most accurate. Then anime.
3. If you're going to add "yet another Uchiha", or "yet another Aburame" and whatever, make sure the character fits well with what you see in the manga and anime. Uchihas mostly have black hair and black eyes, may or may not have Sharingan, and the like. Don't make him / her have "brown hair, green eyes" whatsoever. This is also WRONG. And make sure that he / she is not truly related, as point 1 said. You can make him / her the Uchiha siblings' close cousin, or neighbor, but NOT "Sasuke's younger sister / brother". Stick to the fact. (Why do I use Uchiha? Because they are most likely be abused by authors. ;)
4. You can make "insanely powerful characters", whut. BUT! Don't make them even "more powerful than any of the Bijuus / Tailed Beasts". This is SO NOT Naruto. The Nine-Tailed Demon Fox IS the strongest character of all, accept the fact.
5. If he / she's a ninja, create at least one useful jutsu for him / her. Basics like Bunshin no Jutsu (Clone Technique) and Kawarimi no Jutsu (Replacement Technique) can be used, but remember:
- Kage Bunshin no Jutsu (Shadow Clone Technique) can only be used by Naruto, Jounins, Kages, and those with high level of chakra.
- Healing Techniques can only be used by medical ninjas. Although you can make one other healing technique of your own.
- Sharingan can only be used by Uchihas and Kakashi. So if your OC is somehow Sasuke's cousin, he / she may use it. As long as he / she's an Uchiha.
- Signature moves like Rasengan, Raikiri, Tsukuyomi, Chidori and the like can only be used by certain characters only. No copycats needed!
- If you're actually creating a technique, it must be either in English, or Japanese with English translations. Not all of us understand Japanese. And put some sense, like how it worked. If you put things like "Heaven's Destruction" but you don't tell us what it does, it's still useless.
6. I can understand if you want to make him / her stand out. Just put some flaws in him / her. Powerful but clumsy, or genius and determined, but naive and forgetful. Nobody is perfect.
7. Dark pasts are accepted, but don't over-exaggerating. "She was left by her mother in a garbage can after she was born. She had to grow up all by herself, with no one else to help. When she was 9, people liked to beat her a lot, and there are many times when she tried to kill herself. However, she managed to live on." This has so many flaws and will not work (she should die instantly due to hunger and infections after she was left by her mother in the garbage can, you know).
8. Follow the facts given by the manga and anime. Naruto shouldn't have a father other than Yondaime, and has no siblings. He can, however, fall in love with someone - but since he liked Sakura the most, it's a slim chance for him to like an original character, not so fast. Unless Sakura is dead. >_>
You don't have to follow all of the points I gave; nobody is perfect, and so should your character. Just make sure you at least follow the facts given through the manga and anime; they will help you out. And don't forget to make researches; about places, other characters' personalities whatsoever. =^_^=

Ok so don't make it a mary-sue, they SUCK! I gusse no insanely power cause it's cheezy. Also don't go like this is Naruto or any other character's lost sibling or relative, cause that's also cheezy.Don't give them like sharinagan or bloodline limits that the REAL characters have. So that's basically what I would say as a die hard Naruto fan. If you make a story to go with your character mesage me! Fanfics are AWSOME!
Well, you already know to never make them too powerful (which is hard for me) and never make them too perfect either. If all the guys are crushing on her (or the girls on him) then you're not doing to well and if Sasuke likes her (if its a girl and its ok to have Sasuke like her character) make sure he stays in character. What I mean by that is make sure he doesn't blush every time he sees her, kisses her out of no where, asks her out just like that, flirt with her, or anything you know he wouldn't do. Make sure you're character isn't a Uchiha clan survivor or they magical have sharigan. You can make up your own clan (not too made up though) and keep them around the same strength as the other characters.
