You are correct to a degree. The original Venom was Eddie Brock but the alien symbiote that bonded with him did not come to earth like it did in the movie. It was originally bonded to Peter Parker in Secret Wars II where the heroes of earth were teleported to an alien planet.
How the symbiote bonded to Eddie Brock on the other hand, is almost similar to that in the comics. Spider-Man rejected the alien after he discovered that it wanted to bond with him. He got rid of the alien with the help of Reed Richards from the Fantastic 4. The alien later tried to rebond with him and he got rid of it in a church tower with a bell. The alien has two particular weaknesses. Loud noise and fire.
After Eddie Brock was imprisoned, the alien busted him out and rebonded with him but left a small trace of itself behind. Eddie's cell mate, Cletus Kassidy, touched it and became Carnage.
The current Venom in the comics is actually MacDonald Gargan, who was formerly known as The Scorpion. The symbiote left Eddie when it discovered he had terminal cancer. Follow the links for more info on the villains that I've mentioned.
Actually, aside from some things, Spidy 3 was pretty acurate at the creation of Eddie Brock/Venom...
The thing they missed, is that Spidy picked up the symbiote during the Secret Wars when he was on another planet...
The entire story line is too much for movie goers to understand...
it was spidey when he was in space. the guy in the prison is Carnage i.e. Venom's offspring.
No, the astronaut only brought the symbiot to Earth but never became Venom...
Eddie Brock was the real true Venom.
Not the first one who use it thought
(But in the movie Eddie Brock personality was completely different, not tough at all)
