Question: what exactly is ultimate marvel and whats the big deal about ultimate marvel anyway??
What is meant when they say spider-man's first ultimate appearance? Is it just as important as his first appearance, or will it be one day?

the marvel universe started in the 60s. over the next 40 years or so, the backstories and histories and timelines got so complicated, it would be hard for anybody to follow completely. marvel made the ultimate universe to start over fresh in the new millenium, to connect better to the youth. its more modern, and easier for people to pick up.
ultimate marvel has been very popular and i have to say its been extremely well handled. with something like this, its easy to mess it up because of the delicacy of the old marvel legends, but i have to say i consider ultimate spiderman one of the best comics out there. i dont think its a sales gimmick because its been going on for years now, and they have several ultimate series now.
ultimate spiderman first appeared in the ultimate universe in ultimate spiderman #1, not in amazing fantasy because the amazing fantasy is in a different universe. the editor was probably making sure he cleared up any ambiguities. i'm going to say that ultimate spidermans first appearance would not be as important as amazing fantasys, but it could be one day and most likely will.
its not too impressive to have the entire collection of ultimate marvel as of now, but its not a simple or common thing either. it will be in the future though, for sure.
Ultimate Marvel is like a comic universe outside the normal one. Where all the known characters have been revamped to make them more appealing or cooler to newer or younger readers. Characters with a long history like the Fantastic Four, X-Men, Spiderman have been made younger, their histories redone to make it easier for new readers.
When it says Spider-Man's 1st Ultimate appearance it means when he first appeared in print in an Ultimate title.
basically what the guy with the first answer is saying is they were starting from scratch. the characters are a bit different from there original counterparts
