Question: why is it that so many anime geeks seem to hate american cartoons and tend to trash them so much?

Answers: why is it that so many anime geeks seem to hate american cartoons and tend to trash them so much?

This more than likely comes from a difference of culture. In japan it's more efficient to hire and animation crew and make an anime than it is to shoot a live action television series. besides that the Japaneses are not known to show their emotions very well and anime is exaggerated. So seeing a real situation with large expressive eyes and a mouth whose size is based on how serious the situation is helps to communicate the feelings of the situation. The art style is also different and aside of the face, design is much closer to the real structure of the body (usually).

In America shooting a live action series is cheep and yields high results. Also cartoons are aimed at children mainly due to their over dramatic use of comedy. loony toons would be a good example with it's slapstick violence. The colours are also very bright and entertaining to children, who also love over saturated colours. Finally American cartoons don't often hold story and lack an overall cohesive feel (if it even exists).

Down to brass tacks the difference (and reason for bashing) is something that I've come to understand through my study of language. Feelings, the feelings that Anime communicate are nearly if not always stronger than those in cartoons. Anime is aimed at an older crowd that cares about the big picture AND all the gritty details that you deal with in life. Even anime for children is typically higher on it's amount of feelings communicated. Mahoraba, Kaleido star, Cardcaptor Sakura they all have a childish feel and simplicity to them but have a bigger story moving all the time or at least they are setting a moral.

In the end the most likely reason Otaku (aka anime geeks) hate and bash cartoon from the US is because we consider it on a lower level (for good reason as i explained). If people say "you watch still cartoons?" which I'm sure many otaku have herd, it implies your still watching mind numbing pointless drivel and haven't graduated to a higher quality of story telling, and level of feeling intensity. In other words it's like being told your still a child unaware of the better things in the world.

We bash American cartoons because of how popular opinion has grouped our high quality anime with low quality children's programing.
We don't watch "Cartoons" we watch "Anime"!

anime "geeks"? i think we anime FANS are just people that like anime.

and even though i'm not a HUGE fan, i still LOVE the american cartoons, i think they're entertaining.

I agree... those people are not "geeks" they are just into anime alot... I mean I do have a freind that likes anime alot!!She loves American cartoons!! Well that wasn;t the queistion... the answer to that question(well that I know of) is that Anime " geeks " (as u call them) are sooo attached to anime that they think that the american cartoons are not as satisfying!! They also sometimes think the art sucks, the story is too boring, the voices are lame ... u know that stuff!! the bottom line...they are just picky

Go Lain!!!

Let's see. I don't mind american cartoons when I'm looking for something mindless and entertaining that doesn't require me to think too much. However, I enjoy anime more because of the interesting in depth storyline. Anime is just like any other series, just animated; it's not just for kids. I'mnot a fan of the show, but watching anime is like watching Smallville, or even Ugly Betty; it actually has a story that you can get lost in, characters that have personlities that you can grow to love and hate. Really, Americn cartoons don't have that.
Every episode is different and usually revolves around mundane everyday tasks that take stupid twists and turns because the characters are incpable of intelligence. Like I said earlier, I have nothing against American cartoons, I like Fosters, and I love Family Guy ^.^

No offense but Americans seem to trash anime a lot too. Oh, if you like American cartoons you can be called a geek too, it's only fair!
