Akira- one of the anime movies that started the whole anime revolution in the United States. It's classic, amazingly done for the 1980's, great story line, and it's also Sci-Fi

Kikaider- another older one but still worth a watch. The style od animation has more of an Astro Boy feel to it which may turn some viewers off

I think a REALLY good series to rent is Avatar: The Last Airbender.

I kept hearing tons of good things about it. So finally when I heard that M. Night Shyamalan was a fan and had signed a 3 picture movie deal to direct a live-action version of the show, I decided that I HAD to watch a few episodes to find out what it was about. So I started watching the show about 2 weeks ago and finished all 2.5 season in less than 5 days! This is a feat considering I'm in college and don't have very much free time to watch shows anymore. Now I'm all caught up and waiting for the new episodes to air on Nickelodeon!

It's an American show that has a Japanese style/look. So it makes it really interesting. The characters are GREAT and the plot is intense and interesting! I love Simpsons too, so I would highly recommend it.

Other good cartoons are The Venture Brothers (a hilarious show that parodies the Hanna-Barbara classics like Johnny Quest and Scooby Doo) and Cowboy Bebop (if you like sci-fi and anime).

Movies, pick any movie from Studio Ghibli and you should be happy with it.

Series, I'm partial to the Tenchi sets -- especially the original Ryo-ohki ones. There's also Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Princes Miyu, Popotan, Crayon Shin-chan...lots'n'lots'n'lots of series out there, but those are some of my favorites.
