the headless horseman kills the witch
the horseman didn't regard the church as sacred (anti-christian theme in the movie) so the pentagram was drawn to ward against him. The horseman however used a fence post tied to a rope as a harpoon and dragged his victim out without setting foot inside the church. The pentagram worked but the horseman found a way around it.
