They are not thorns they are senbon needles. This occured during the fight between Haku.

I don't recall him ever getting thorns but around 140-150 he transforms into a creature like thing in one of the sweetest battles in the series.
I can remember i think thats an old episode..........
err......i cant remember what episode it was....but i think it was the one where sasike was fighting haku...... around episode 6 to 15 i think.
