Who is more powerful Neji or Shikamaru?!

That's a really TOUGH question. Well Neji is strong 'cause he master the byakugan and most ppl call him a genius, but Shikamaru is very SMART and has shadow possession jutsu and can stop Neji. He is also a wiz at strategies! So I say that if in a fight, they might probable get a tie.
Neji, he's from the Hyuuga Clan, which used to be the most powerful clan before Uchiha Madera, the first Sharingan Born.
Neji is a jonin in Shippuden (sorry about major spoilers) so Neji is.

Even though Shikamaru might be smarter, Neji is definitely more powerful. I'm not completely sure who would win in a fight though since Neji has a hard time with long-range combat while Shikamaru is good at keeping his distance and outsmarting his enemies.

Hm...Neji is more powerfull but Shikamaru is more smart. As for which one would win in a fight, it could be both. Although Neji is a jounin, Temari stated thatShikamaru could become one if he acually tried.
I don't think you can just look at their ranks and say "well, that settles it", because they consider more than fighting skill in promotions. Based on what happened in the Chunin exams, I tihnk you'd have to consider Neji, Sasuke, and maybe even Naruto more powerful than Shikimaru, yet he's the one that got promoted. Plus, Naruto and Sasuke are still Genin, but are way beyond Jonin power, simply because they haven't taken the tests again. How do we know the others *have* taken the tests every chance they got?
I'd have to say that Shikimaru is stronger now, though. Neji has failed to develop any sort of attack or counterattack for ranged combat. Any ranged fighter of reasonable skill with a bread-and-butter attack, that isn't a huge charka drain, could just pepper him with it all day long until he can't keep Kaiten up anymore. Basically, he has to get in close, through his opponent's attacks, and doesn't have any special trick to help him get there or keep him there.
On the other hand, Shikimaru's Shadow Possession jutsu is a near-perfect offense and a near-perfect short- and mid-range defense all rolled into one move (but with what he showed at the exam, it would look like he's using a jutsu he can't handle yet). Beating someone who can win just by getting within a certain range of you is an incredible challenge.
Same as all these guys, Neji is Superior in power. However, Neji would answer to Shikamaru if they were placed in a team together. Shikamaru is a ruthlessly intelligent leader and is unmatched by anyone except maybe Kakashi, who is better than both combined. I thought Shikamaru was Jounin as well?
