Alright, I think I understand the question. I think your wondering how Ichigo can be a living human, a hollow, and a shinigami (soul reaper), no?
If so, to start off, you have to look at the first episode. Well, Ichigo plunged Rukia's sword into chest, he obtained his shinigami powers. He's able to remain a human, but revert to being a shinigami at any time.
Now, fast forward to when Rukia was taken back to Soul Society by her close friend Abarai Renji and her older brother Kuchiki Byakuya. When Ichigo attempted to battle the two, Byakuya defeated Ichigo and damaged him in a spot (I'm pretty sure it's in the chest area) that caused him to lose his shinigami powers.
Not long afterwards, Ichigo trained under the hands of Urahara Kisuke (Hat n' Clogs, I believe they call him in the English dub). To acquire his own shinigami powers (since he had borrowed Rukia's to get his own the first time), Ichigo's soul had to be cut off from his real body. Remember how Orihime was "killed" by her brother that became a hollow , and this was shown that she had a chain that connected her heart to her body? This is the exact same thing that happened to Ichigo. Only this time, Ichigo's chain was cut off, and we know what happens to the chain of a soul when it gets cut off. The severed chain from the heart starts to break down and the soul becomes a hollow. This is what happened to Ichigo. The severed chain connected to his heart broke down completely, and Ichigo began his transformation as a hollow. However, the steps to the transformation started differently with Ichigo. Instead of developing the mask that happens at the end of the transformation, Ichgio developed the mask first. Fortunately, Ichigo was able to break the mask and gain control of himself, thus giving him his shinigami powers. Yet, there were some things that happened.
I'm assuming that you're watching the English dub so I can't reveal everything just yet. I'll just briefly summarize without giving the juicy details. You see, when Ichigo began the hollow transformation under Urahara's training, that hollow part of him remained. As Ichigo got stronger, the hollow gets stronger. That's when an internal battle begins between Ichigo and his hollow form. You'll see what I'm talking about when Ichigo battles Byakuya. Much later, Ichigo will become a vizard. I can't tell you what it means, but it involves his hollow. You can look it up on Wikipedia if you want.

Tite Kubo makes it possible. Ichigo's dad is a shinigami, and Ichigo has his powers at first from Rukia, then from Urahara. But because of the dangerous training, a hollow enters Ichigo and constantly appears. At the same time, Ichigo is a human because he isn't dead yet.
Because he is a vaizard, a shinigami who gained hollow powers. I think thats why but it may been when he had to come a shinigami again after Byakuya took his powers. He almost didn't regain his powers and maybe that is why he is part hollow.
recall around episode 20 when ichigo was regaining his soul reaper powers (urahara threw him in a hole in the ground and he had to climb out in three days)- he almost became a hollow. however, because he was resisting it so hard, instead of growing a hole in his chest first, he grew the mask, which is normally last. when he emerged from the hole in the ground, he was wearing soul reaper clothes and a hollow mask. that's why he has both powers- because he almost became a hollow.

I thought about Urahara's training, teaching Ichigo to be a Soul Reaper, again, and I saw that everytime the hollow mask appears, it just got in Ichigo's way.
