it's about 2 brothers who try to bring their deceased mother back to life, with the result being a total failure and the cost of the older brother, Edward Elric's left leg, and the younger, Alphonse Elric' entire body. On impulse the older uses Alchemiy to transmute his brother's soul and bound it to a suit of armor sacraficing his right arm. The 2 brothers head out in search for the philosopher's stone which ignores the main law of alchemy; Equivelent Echange, in order to bring their bodie's back to normal. but to search for it, the younger brother joins the state military and becomes a soldier in order for the state to fund his research into the search.
