I don't really like this kind of anime but i'm sure that WolfRain will fit your taste, it cyberpank and have lot of action and everything and the one I really liked was Ninja Scroll, it's awsome!
shakugan no shana - great action, great characters and great drama - best anime since lucky star and bleach. series 2 ep 12 out.
gintama - more comedy than action but it is so good it has to be watched. seriously brilliant. ep 45 recently done
d.gray man - fma but a little darker and longer but just as good. episode 65 just done
afro samurai - short but well worth a watch. series 1 complete

one of the main female characters is kind of like that *shudder*...but i guess you tune her out after a while because the other characters are amazing and they're all quite complex. its half magical and half....i'd like to say historical, but i'm not too sure about the accuracy.
Elfen Lied
this main character is awesome. she basically kills pretty much everyone. LOTS of blood. it's got psychological elements as well. its really short though, so you may or may not like it

not bad overall. the artwork is debateable, depending on your preferences. but the storyline is pretty okay.

i must say that the female characters aren't too bad in this one (give or take a few). it's an action, post apocalyptic, mecha, romance. pretty good though
Blood+
she starts out a little dense, but she evolves throughout the story to become "strong". it's about "vampires" and slaying them. the plots not bad and the music is good. there are a lot of complex characters too
