They transformed into a cybertron version of vehicles.Just imagine a space age version of their earth versions. You can see some of them in the original pilot episode.
They didn't transform to anything. They Scan the place to become transformers so they could adapt and hide. People would stated to be suspicious if they saw a giant Robot looking for Energon. They need it to move in earth freely.
Yeah, just watch the really first episode of the cartoon. You'll see how Bubblebee, Wheeljack, Prowl ( I think ) and some Decepticans plane like Starscream transformed. Nothing that looked like the way they are after they come too earth.
One more episode would be Desertion of the Dinobots where you can see some of the first transformers transformations.
