Why do so many animes have a total of 26 episodes?!

Question: Being a recent convert to the world of anime, I have been watching a large number of full anime series on DVD. Many of the animes seem to end at the 26th episode, unless they become extremely commercial (like the Pokemon or Yu-gi-oh! anime series). Is there an explanation to this pattern, or is this just a coincidence? Is it simply the easiest form of animation to produce only 26 episodes?

A regular anime season lasts half a year, or 26 weeks long. Each week there is a new episode, hence 26 episodes. The more popular animes that last longer than one season usually end in a multiple of 26, but there are exceptions.

I think it's just a coincidence!

Easy. That is how many episodes are in a season.

A lot of anime series are only one season because it is easier to produce them that way, and to get the funding. A studio doesn't want to give a new series the funds to make more than a single season because if it proves not to be popular they have wasted all that money on a show no one watches.

Sometimes series will also go a little bit over and have 27 or 28, those are done as special episodes. They're usually done for fun, and can be parodies or humor, but sometimes they're made to compliment the popularity of a series and as a treat to the fans.

Now look at series that are longer running, each season will have 26 episodes, sometimes one or two extra.

Who knows if Japan's sweeps for the entire year run only for 6 months (1 episode per week, making it 26 episodes per year).

That aside, take a good look at One Piece, Bleach, Ghost in the Shell, Full Metal Panic, and Hellsing.

These are great titles that will cement your liking of anime.

I would have thought it's so's you have enough first-run episodes to fill half the year, and enough reruns until whatever new show comes to take the timeslot.

its because most animes have 2 seasons
13 episodes is one season
thats why some are 13, 25, 26
it depends
or even more
have you ever noticed the theme song change in animes?
new season!

Well a year has 52 weeks, right. And in general there are 2 big period for new anime to come out in Japan : April and October. So that's why a lot of anime have 26 episodes or so. It allows the TV to show 2 series a year at a given time.

im not sure

cause its usually as low as 26 frames per second. you gotta use your kidneys, studly one. grate 2008 and don't be late.
