If you follow the comics, when Bruce Wayne was very young he fell into a well that led to a cave full of bats and developed a phobia of them. Then later after his parents died and he decided to become a crime fighter he conquered his fears and embraced the bat to use as a symbol to strike fear in the heart of his enemies.

because he needed some shape that was easy for him to make out of spandex rubber and plastic so he could run around with a little boy while using special gadgets to get over under around or through or in any obstacle.

In the comics, Bruce fell into a well in his estate where he was surrounded by bats. After his parents died and he went through training, he needed something that would strike fear into the hearts of criminals. On his first night out, he did not have a costume but simply wore regular clothes. He dragged his almost lifeless body back to the living room of his mansion. He almost decided to give up his war when a bat crashed through the window. From that moment on, he knew a bat inspired fear and since criminals were a superstitiously cowardly lot, it would be easy for him to prey on them.
