Yeah, it's what you said, .hack//sign. It came out on Cartoon Network for a while but then it was off.

The character Subaru (the witch girl with little wings on her back) in the World game is a girl, the player who played him is also a girl (I think that she was disabled and have to use a wheelchair, the World is her way to socialize like a normal person).
She's the closest person in .hack//Sign that resemble Rei Ayanami from Shin Seiki Evangelion.
The main lead character of the story on the other hand is Tsukasa, the character Tsukasa (a magician with staff) in the World game is a boy/male, however the player who played him is a (seriously disturbed) girl who is stuck in a coma due a glitch in the game system (her 'soul' is still lost in the game).
The closest Shin Seiki Evangelion character I could compare him/her to is Shinji Ikari.
