Arguement can be made for Mandrake, the Phantom, Dr. Occult, the Phantom Magician, and even the Clock as being the first "superhero," but both the Phantom and Mandrake started as newspaper strips and were reprinted in comic books. The same is true of the Phantom Magician, except he was featured in a few original stories in addition to the reprints. The Clock is arguably the first original masked crimefighter to appear in comic books, but he had no abilities the average man didn't have, save a good deal of luck and a lot of nerve.Dr. Occult, "the Ghost Detective," did have a variety of powers, all derived from magic, and in one four or five part story Occult could fly, at least a year before the first 'Superman' story was published. Unfortunately, Dr. Occult never progressed beyond four page stories and he was never particularly well known (he never appeared on the cover of 'New Fun/Mor Fun', the comic book in which he appeared; Occult was history by the time the first Superman story was published (both 'Dr. Occult' and 'Superman' were created by the same team: writer Jerry Seigel and artist Joe Shuster).

The term "superhero" was apparently first used in 1942 and was, ironically, applied to the Guardian, who had no "super powers." However, by the time the term "superhero" was coined, Superman had been around four years and was the best known original comic book character in the world (in addition to comic book appearances, by 1942, Superman also had a radio program, a daily newspaper strip, a sunday newspaper strip, and was appearing in color cartoons.

Logically, Superman was the first "superhero," even if there were prototypes before him, because he was the first original character to appear in comic books who was a success, and he was so successful that he became the model for many other "superheroes." Had Superman not been a runaway hit, it is doubtful the word "superhero" would have ever been coined to describe anything.

Jesus! =D

anyone

The first super-powered, costumed crime fighter in comics was not Superman. It was Mandrake the Magician. Wearing a stage magician's black silk, Mandrake used his powers against evil four years before the Man of Steel. And although his early magical powers were toned down later, being able to make people believe anything, simply by gesturing hypnotically, is still a marvelous and very useful ability. By the time comic books got rolling, he was successful enough to spawn many tuxedo-clad magical superheroes, such as Kardak and Zatara, some of which made marks of their own in comics.

MIGHTY MOUSE

Actually it was Dr. Occult or Dr. Mystic, and then Superman. check the link below.

Since comics have been around longer than I have, I'm guessing when I say maybe either Flash Gordon or the Phantom.

Hugo Danner.

Running faster than an express train, nothing could pierce his skin except the biggest artillery shell, leap tall building in a single bound, lift a car.....etc.etc.

Most people in that time thought that the Golden Age Superman powers was copied from Hugo Danner powers.

Superman was the first modern Superhero. Not the FIRST one.
