there are 2 kinds of manga for mature audience:
+ JOSEI (woman) such as: omoiterru, bara no tameni, juliet no tamago, angel sanctuary, ai yori aoshi
+ SEINEN (man) such as: 20th century boys, vagabond, XXXholic, shin angyo onshin, monster, yami no aegis, maison ikkoku, chobits, pluto
those manga are adult oriented but not fall to hentai genres, still fanservice can be found here, mind you fanservice isn't translated directly to hentai. they are more to action adventures and some are sci-fi or romance comedy or has historical or religion background. me meself collect these manga tankoubon so i had read them. my fave are from URASAWA-sensei (20th century boys, monster, pluto- a reco)
you can check omanga.com for seinen stuff, they got a selected list complete with description for each manga, what kind of genres and also a warning if any title contains disturbing visual. a good one so you can always cross check before pushing that download button.

If you wanted specific titles, here are my favorite josei manga:
NANA - a series that tells of two young women of the same age with the same name - Nana - but with completely different personalities. The manga documents how deep their friendship runs, the romantic tangles they get into (Nana O. and her devotion to her man, Ren, and Nana K.'s many romances and her eventual growth), and the world of celebrity and rock-and-roll. It's very heavy drama.
Basilisk - a Romeo-and-Juliet-esque series that tells of the ten-day war between two ninja clans that abhor each other, and the forbidden and doomed love of the two ninjas who belong on the opposite sides. Very brutal and tragic.
Confidential Confessions - It's a realistic view of the plight of teenage Japanese girls today. Each chapter is a one-shot for a different girl, and talks about how each girl copes with a particular issue, like bullying, prostitution, drugs, and the like. Some end tragically, most end resolved.
Paradise Kiss - A manga that involves high fashion, celebrity, and romantic tangles. It revolves around a bookish high school girl who, after getting her first taste of the fashion world as a model, gets thrown deeper into it, giving drama and romance into her once lackluster life.
I think you need something within the "Slice of Life" category or "Psychological" and "Mature" genre.
