i actually started around the kasanoda point, which is like chapter 34, but if you want to start where the anime sort of leads off, go ahead and start with chapter 38. you might want to go back and read 22-24, because that's a new arc, and chapter 27, because that's also not covered in the anime.
The manga and anime are quite different actually. Although they follow the same storyline, the manga, as far as i've read, has exempted some stories and added others. If i were you, i would read the manga from volume one. :D
like you, i watched the anime first but i read the manga from volume 1. right now i'm on 9 and reading through the Shojo beat line and as far as i know, volume 10 hasnt come out yet.
if you search around online ((as i have xD)) you can find other lines that have come out with the next volumes.
but if i were you, i would read the manga from the start. its a different storyline from the anime but it does stray enough to be totally different. :/
