Question: i know there was really any huge connections between the two, however i remember seeing a a character in the show holding a picture of batou and the major and the major was holding a baby. so what was that picture about?

Batou have a big crush on Motoko / the Major.
It's actually more than just a plain big crush, it's a pure love thing.
Motoko / the Major appreciated his affections, but don't exactly feel the same way to him.
As for the picture of the baby.
Probably it's about one of their adventures, in it they probably once take care a baby.
Or it's just an image manipulation, either for a mission or just a dream that Batou have on the Motoko / the Major (wishing to have a family together).
As for Batou and Motoko / the Major.
In a 2nd Gig episode, Saitoh once told a story about on how he first met Motoko / the Major.
In it even Batou is still a relatively new member of Motoko / the Major's team, clueless on how the baboon lady acted. Though Ishikawa in it was a relatively old member.
Of course the story was potrayed in that episode as potential made up story by Saitoh, however the episode potrayed that there's a strong possibility that a few of the story elements might be true.

I don't think there was a connection. They may have been in the war together. The Major was in a synthetic form a very young age. That is what the crushing doll part in the beginning of the show was about.
