Well, there are many of them, Robot Jox is one of them.
It featured a tournament of giant robots between the West bloc countries and the East bloc countries, where there are men inside them manipulating using virtual reality controls.
The movie is a low budget live action movie, but the stop motion animation of it is pretty good.
Both of the final forms of the robots were able to fly into the edge of space, and one of them can transformed into a tracked vehicle (looking like Gundam's Guntank).
