If the characters on Naruto are suppose to be ninja how come they don't batt!

Some do depends on the person and their abilities. Not all ninja has to be a swordsman master.
i think it's betterthis way because you get to see different techniques instead of 300 boring sword fights

It's simple. Most fighting anime don't even remotely resemble reality. Naruto is no exception.
ur thinking of samuri they r the only ones ho always have swords ninga is stealth and ability they use what ever the feel compatible

The art of Ninjitsu does not rely on the art of weapon fighting, but stealth. It is of choice that a ninja uses a weapon.
I always wondered why they didn't use guns instead... They have radios, right? So why not some guns?
the first ninjas in history are believed to be peasants and farmers who opposes the samurai rulers. samurais, of course fight head on and with swords. it is believed that because the poor people aren't allowed weapons, they choose to rely on everyday farm objects and modify it. they also rely on stealth as they want their identities concealed as they don't want their family members to suffer at the hands of their rulers.

Some actually do use swords like the ANBU, Sasuke, Orochimaru. Not all ninja have to use swords. Only samurai HAVE to use swords.

For a ninja, a sword is an optional weapon. Ninja Turtles for example, only Leonardo has a sword, the others don't. The same goes to Naruto characters. But for a samurai, it's a must. Have you seen a samurai in anime fighting without bringing along a sword? =^_^=
Sweety that's a Samurai not a Ninja... Samurai's are all about speed, agility, fast assassinations, being nobleman's guards, following the laws of one family and only that one ect...
Ninjas are about Justus's, Chakra, Working for hire, Long range weapons ect...
ninjas are suppose to be all sneaky- i think others would kind of notice and a great big sword on your back!

if you are wanting to see an anime/manga with sword fighting a' plenty, bleach is probably the best option!
