What is going on with Geneon US?!

Question: I was told by a lot of people in recently Geneon US is closing/ going out of business. Someone had to confront me earlier about it ans start a thing saying they were down sizing.

I looked it up left and right to find out what is going on but I keep getting the same answer others told me.

Does anyone know exactly what is going on? the most useful site is wiki right now and they are pretty good with the truth when it comes to anime.

Geneon has stopped distributing anime since last year. The distribution deal Geneon was going to have with ADV that got canceled (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/200... probably didn't help either.

ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ ) is a pretty good source for this kind of stuff. But it's been on other websites too. Some say that fansubs help lead to this.

There are some rumors right now that ADV is going through some trouble right now too, since they're taking some of the anime they licensed off their website.

Basically, what I'd say to sum it up is that the anime industry in the U.S. isn't really at it's best right now. And I could see why, it is pretty expensive. Bandai recently licensed Shigofumi and True Tears, and 1 volume with 2 episodes in each volume is costing about $40, and the last volume of Shigofumi with 1 episode is costing about $30. Yeah, $20 or $30 per episode.

wikipedia says they are already closed as of dec. 07. thats pretty sad. hope they dont stop making the animes themselves, cuz i didnt really buy the dvds anyway...

=) has got you completey covered- I just want to clarify one thing she said.

The price of True Tears and Shigofumi are NOT representative of the entire industry. These are what you would call an experiment. True Tears and Shigofumi are getting the quickest stateside release EVER (aproximately one month or two after the series finishes airing). This is about a year quicker than normal releases. The reason for the huge prices is because that is the same prices that Japan ALWAYS charages for their anime DVDs when they first come out. Japan wouldn't let America sell them cheaper even if Bandai Visual wanted to because they are afraid Japanese customers would start importing them back (since the DVD releases in both countries are so close together for a change). So these $20-30 per episode, while ridiculous, can't be done anything about.

On the opposide side of the spectrum we have anime like Simoun where the new DVDs coming out only cost about $3 per episode. Just remember, True Tears and Shigofumi aren't the norm- just a new experiment.

Edit: The ADV story is a very, very new developement (a day old)- so we can't be certain. We saw some titles disappear from ADV's store website. ADV has reported vaguely that they were having some challenges, but as of now plan on continueing those releases.

Edit2: This is a response to MagicianTrent and his attack of fansubs: You know what? DVD sales have decreased slightly the last two years, but the sales are still ridiculously higher than they were 3 years ago (50% up in Geneon for example).

Are you also aware that the average license cost has increased 5 to 10 times the amount it was a few years ago? Japan has been trying to milk the US industry for all its worth since anime got more popular here. Instead of gambling about 100-200k on a series, companies now have to pay over 1 million dollars to aquire the rights to sell it here. Ever think that that may be part of the reason Geneon was having troubles in this market?

The real question now: What is going on with ADV Films that broke it's agreement.

This is what happens when everyone downloads subs. They never buy them afterward so the anime distributors here in the states can't sell anything.
