The Sharingan (写輪眼, Sharingan? literally "Copy Wheel Eye," English manga "Mirror Wheel Eye") is an eye technique (瞳術, dōjutsu?) that naturally occurs in a select few members of the Uchiha clan. The Sharingan is thought to be descended from the Byakugan,[34] but grants the user different abilities and a different insight. The Sharingan does not automatically appear from birth in a user; instead, it will usually appear when the user is in a life-threatening situation, where the power of the Sharingan could save them. After this first appearance, the user can then call up the Sharingan any time they wish. The power of the Sharingan is judged through the number of tomoe in the eye, with a maximum of three in each. The characters who currently possess the Sharingan include Sasuke Uchiha, Itachi Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake, and Tobi.
The Sharingan's first and most well known ability is to memorize any technique that it witnesses. It can memorize any standard form of jutsu with perfect accuracy, allowing the user to use the techniques as his own. In order to reproduce copied jutsu, however, one must have the necessary skill or ability to perform them. A prime example is Rock Lee's Strong Fist taijutsu. While Sasuke was able to copy some of Lee's moves, they put a much more significant strain on him since he hasn't had the same training as Lee has.[35]
The Sharingan's second ability is granting the user incredible clarity of perception, allowing them to track fast-moving objects with ease and even predict the subsequent movements of those objects.[36] The ability to track and predict movement is largely based on individual skill, as unskilled users have much more trouble tracking fast-moving objects. A fully-evolved Sharingan eye can track even the quickest opponents, though, like the first ability, it doesn't necessarily mean the user has the ability to react to it.[37] This perception is also great enough to see through genjutsu and to observe the movement and flow of chakra, but not to the same extent or clarity as the Byakugan.[38] Additionally, the Sharingan grants the user exceptional analytical powers, allowing them to instinctively pick up on various visual clues with little difficulty. For example, Sasuke was able to reproduce answers on another person's test by watching their pencil movements during the Chunin Exam.[39]
The Sharingan's third capability is a unique brand of hypnosis that involves suggesting actions and thoughts to the opponent. When used in conjunction with the aforementioned aspects of the Sharingan, this allows the user to perfectly mimic every move their opponent makes, even before they do, making it appear as if the user can see the future.[40] It also allows for other forms of hypnotism, such as putting an opponent to sleep, replaying memories to someone else, or creating various illusions to fool an opponent.
It is possible to transplant Sharingan eyes from one person to another, as occurred with Kakashi and his deceased comrade Obito Uchiha.[41] However, transplanted eyes do not work as well in a non-Uchiha body; Kakashi's eye is always active, causing him great strain when he uses it and forcing him to recuperate for extended periods of time after a battle. Kakashi keeps it covered when not using it to avoid this side effect in his everyday activities. Uchiha clan members are not burdened with this weakness; while activation of the Sharingan does consume chakra, the drain is so small as to be almost insignificant. Itachi in particular seems to have no trouble keeping his Sharingan activated near-constantly.
IGN, a popular multimedia and reviews website, calls the Sharingan as one of the best abilities that a ninja could have, but isn't very original due to its main power being imitation.[11]

The Uchiha family’s bloodline limit, which consists of red eyes with 2-4 pupils, Sharingan allows user to perceive motion clearer than normal eyes, sees through Ninjutsu and Genjutsu, copies motion and even ninja techniques, and can subliminally input ideas into its victim - Mangekyou can even induce extremely powerful hypnosis.
Parts of the Eye
All right, now first let’s go a little more in-depth into what the eye is made of. The retina is a sheet of receptors at the back of the eye and is made up from two types of photoreceptor cells; rods and cones.
Rods detect light levels, which means they only pick up black and white images. In humans, these are more common near the edge of the eye. Now, there is only a limited number of space for rods and cones in the retina, so if you increase the count of one you have to decrease the count of the other.
Essentially, you must trade color perception for more detailed perception in black and white, which is largely what enables us to perceive motion.

Does that make even the least bit of sense? No? Crap, all right, how about rods detect motion and cones detect color, is that more understandable?
Okay, now since you can’t really increase the sensitivity of a rod, you would have to increase the number of them. One way is to severely decrease the number of cones. Well, this won’t work without sacrificing color, and Uchiha’s don’t seem to be colorblind typically, so that must not be it.
Another way is to make the retina bigger, but in order to get to the level Sharingan is you’d have to have pretty damned big eyes.
Sharingan has Extra Pupils
Now, the obvious factor that sets Sharingan apart from normal eyes are the extra pupils, isn’t it? But how would that help? Well, if rods are more common around the edge of the eye, increasing the amount of pupils would increase the number outer edges to be lined with rods.
So, if the center pupil were devoted entirely to cones to retain a sense of color, then the space in the other pupils would be specifically for rods in order to get a better perception of motion, which is what the Sharingan is.

Now, the application of chakra to activate Sharingan could also be used to stimulate the portion of the brain used for memory retention, inspiring the user’s memory to become eidetic in nature during the activation of Sharingan, and thus giving them not only exceptional perception, but also the photographic memory required to be able to instantly recall any abilities seen.
But, this is the purely scientific view, which gives us no insight into the subliminal messages, so I also have an easier explanation.
A: Ability to see color.
1: Motion perception.
2: Copies all motion perceived.
3: Prediction motion- inferring through rational physics the action about to take place.
B: Ties pupils together for the ability to understand what one sees without getting confused. Without it, you would have three different eyes looking in three different directions and no idea what to focus on or what’s going on.
Hypnosis and Subliminal Messaging of the Sharingan
As for the hypnosis and subliminal messaging, that’s probably from watching the eye spin- have you ever had someone turning a spiral in front of you and speaking softly? It works if one knows what they’re doing, so I’m gonna chalk it up to possible- after all, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- I don’t know what chakra can do, so who’s to say it wouldn’t work?
That’s all I have on that, although I also have a report on the genetic probability of a Byakugan-Sharingan hybrid, but I’ll stop here for now.

The Sharingan is a Kekkei Genkei (Bloodline Limit) used by the Uchiha clan. It was created from the Byakugan by Madara Uchiha, the founder of the Uchiha clan.
The first few types of the Sharingan allows you to use the 'normal' setting of it, which is the ability to see Chakra, and allows you to copy techniques.
Then there's the Mangekyo Sharingan, which you can only achieved from killing your best friend.
It allows you these techniques:
Tsukuyomi or Tsukiyomi
and Amaterasu.
Mangekyo also causes blindness in eyesight, which can only be fixed permenetely (-Spelling?) by taking somebody else's eyes in replacement, and putting them in your eye socket.
