Bleach is the only one I know of. I'm only just getting into the whole anime thing as well. But it has action and violence. I haven't seen the series, I've only read it, but I think they're quite similar.

Instead of relying on people who haven't seen anime outside of the Cartoon Network (or worse, FoxKids) try using a tool that is specifically designed to help with this.
Open your browser to www.anidb.net. On the left sidebar, click on "search." A large page will come up. Go to the bottom where there are several orange "+"s -- clicking on these will expand that section and present checkboxes. This will allow you to choose the type of show to narrow the search to -- some are quite specific and others very general. Directly above that you will see "Votes" and "Reviews" -- I suggest setting a rating of at least 7.00 be placed in each. I am assuming you want English speech or subtitles, so set the language menu to "English." Once your selections are made, click the search button at the bottom of the page.
So, assuming you feel like a good horror show (and you could even specify violence), you would select those checkboxes, set for a high rating (this limits to the more respected shows, set to english, and click "search."

You will receive a list of shows that fit that criteria, at which point you can select the show title and check out the details... show description, episode list, ratings, genres, what groups have subtitled or encoded the show, and even research a link that will take you to a list of similar anime.
The only problem is that a search done in this form returns all the official and unofficial titles of the shows, so a particular show may appear in the listings up to 20 times and in various languages. However this allows you to make a decision by what you are currently in the mood to view... i.e., you may feel more in the mood for an ecchi comedy instead of horror.

You don't even need to be a member, but there are a lot of reasons to become one, including the ability to limit information to the languages you can deal with, and if you like adult anime, it allows access to hentai descriptions. Then there's all the record keeping, rating, reviewing, and checksum codes. And, once you make your decision, just jump over to www.animesuki.com, www.boxtorrents.com, or your favorite anime source or retail store to start watching.

Personally, of the recent influx of shows, I found "Oh, Edo Rocket!" to be an excellent show, which I will purchase if it becomes available in the US. It has comedy, drama, serial killings, alien attacks, nasty bureaucrats, and a collection of less than stable neighbors... as well as a cute girl and an overly ambitious fireworks maker, all in a historic setting in old Edo. However, if you require European/American references and don't understand any Japanese culture, this show might have a lot of material that will go over your head. and here is the AniDB description page for that show:

I highly suggest watching Naruto. Naruto in my opinion is one of the best anime/manga ever so far. I defiantly think is has lived up to the hype about it. The show has a interesting plot with very good art and charter drawing. The show includes action/comedy/romance and drama Here what the show is about. It is about a boy named Naruto who is an orphan and has a demon spirt fox in him that was put there when he was born. Later on Naruto finds friends that like him of who he is. He has made a decision be become the greatest ninja in his village (the village hidden in the leaves), he wants to become hokage, but in order to do that he must train like he never has before as well has battle through missions and interesting foes with his friends and learning new moves/jutsu (speail fighting moves) and marial arts. In between all this there are relationships between charcaters. Naruto is defiantly a series/show/manga that defiantly worth getting into and is one good epic story.

More info:

Twelve years before the events at the focus of the series, the nine-tailed demon fox attacked Konohagakure. It was a powerful demon indeed; a single swing of one of its nine tails would raise tsunamis and flatten mountains. It raised chaos and slaughtered many people, until the leader of the Leaf Village – the Fourth Hokage – defeated it by sacrificing his own life to seal the demon inside a newly-born child, whose origins are as yet unknown. That child's name was Naruto Uzumaki. The Fourth Hokage was celebrated as a hero for sealing the demon fox away. He wanted Naruto to be respected in a similar light by being the containment vessel for the demon fox. The village he grew up in, however, mostly shunned Naruto; they regarded him as if he were the demon fox itself and mistreated him throughout most of his childhood. A decree made by the Third Hokage made it so that the other villagers were forbidden to mention the event to anyone, even to their own children. However, this did not stop them from treating Naruto like an outcast. Although their children did not specifically know why their parents treated Naruto the way they did, they learned through example to despise the boy. As a result, Naruto grew up as an orphan in a lonesome atmosphere without friends, family, or acknowledgment.

All in all it has everything you could want out of anime/manga including action/romance/drama/and comdy.

NARUTO ROCKS!!!!!
