I have been a comic reader for 25 years! I still love Wolverine's style. But as a child, the Incredible Hulk! Fot the last 3 years, my wife and I have been going to Wizerd World Philly,and got to meet Lou Farigno! Awesome!
As far as a female character, I like Harley Quinn, Rogue, and Lady Death.

Male the more I think of it the more I have to say a 3-way tie between Thor, Dr. Strange, and Sub-Mariner. Conan is not on the list because I was a pulp fan first and still think of him as a pulp character whose creator's mad inventiveness was only matched by Barry Smith -- everybody else in comics is too sane to do him justice.
For Thor I mean mainly the Lee/Kirby issues. Insane and awesome, with references to everything from Buck Rogers to Thief of Baghdad. Yeah. I read the Thomas/Buscema and Simonson issues when they first came out. They are excellent. Simonson doesn't have that spark of madness Kirby had and Smith deliberately copied for him, while Thomas and Buscema were clearly adults. ;-(
Dr. Strange was best when drawn by Ditko, Everett, Adkins and Brunner. That would make the best writers Lee, Thomas and Steve Englehart. Gene Colan did better work on Dracula, frankly. And most of the modern artists who worked on it are more like him than like his very designy contemporaries.
Sub Mariner was Bill Everett's masterpiece. Put any story by him in front of me and I will drop everything to read it whether it was written in 1948 or 1972 just before he died. John Byrne did a reasonable job on it but Jae Lee was awesome too. I still read them. Often.
When I think about females I don't think about superheroes. I mean there's the Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Wonder Woman, Zatanna and Black canary but my favorite female in comics is Little Orphan Annie. I disagree profoundly with Harold Gray's politics and the strip was a meditation on his conservatism, however it was also one of the true masterpieces of the medium and that feisty pre-teen girl is adorable without all the sentimentality of the broadway show.
My favorite male superhero is Batman, and I'm not really a fan of any female heroes. My favorite is Harley Quinn, the Joker's girlfriend. She's a villian really, but she's awesome.
