That's a very thoughtful gift!

The best advice I can give you is to read the Wikipedia articles for each of these characters. Wikipedia articles are in depth, and will tell you about many aspects of each character, like their powers, histories, and personal lives, but aren't TOO long. Here's the Batman article (below) to get you started. You can probably make yourself very well versed on each of these characters in an hour by doing this. Good luck, and that's very sweet of you!

edit: here's some REALLY brief character synopsis for each of these people to get you started.

Batman: When his parents were murdered by a robber with a gun, billionaire Bruce Wayne trained his whole life to fight crime, traveling the world and learning every discipline he could. He returned to his home city of Gotham and took the name of Batman to conduct his one man war against crime using his intelligence, martial arts, and a variety of tools he created.

Green Arrow: While stranded on a desert island, millionaire Oliver Queen made his first bow to help him survive. He escaped the island when he defeated drug smugglers who were based there. Returning to his home Star City, Green Arrow began fighting crime with his vast array of arrows. The first openly liberal superhero, Green Arrow is famous for dealing with social issues such as racism, drug use, and standing up for the small people.

Black Canary: Green Arrow's long time on-again-off-again girlfriend (and, very recently, now his wife) Dinah Lance is a superb martial artists who's aided by a super powered sonic scream. In addition to fighting alongside Green Arrow, she's a frequent member of the Justice League, and fights along side Huntress and Barbara Gordon as one of the Birds of Prey.

Flash - Four different men have born the name Flash over the years - Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, Wally West, and Bart Allen (from first to last). They battle crime and a colorful array of rogues in Keystone City using a variety of powers dealing with superspeed. Flash is a regular JLA member, and is well loved by the public. There's even a museum dedicated to him.

Wonder Woman - Wonder Woman is one of the fabled amazons who are empowered by the ancient Greek Gods. Her people lived in secret isolation on an island named Thymiscara until Wonder Woman decided to go out to the world and fight for truth and justice. She has strength and flight, and a magic, unbreakable lasso which acts as a lie detector.

^^^^ All of these above characters are from the DC Universe. The DC universe has been through MANY changes, and sometimes stories change over the years. For instance, for a long time, the man who killed Batman's parents was named Joe Chill, and he was apprehended/killed (depending on the story). About 25 years ago, they decided to change Batman's history so that no one ever found out who killed his parents. In the 1989 Batman movie, a man named Jack Napier killed his parents, and Jack Napier became the Joker. In the comic, we have never been told what the Joker's real name is. Changes in characters' histories like this are common. They may be confusing, so just realize that they happen some times.

Spider-Man - Spider-Man is from Marvel comics, and so does not interact with the characters above. I'm sure you've seen the movies: Geeky teenager Peter Parker gets bit by a radioactive spider which gives him superstrength, agility, and the ability to stuck to walls. He also creates devices attached to his wrists which aid him in shooting webs (the movie made this "organic web shooters", but in the comics the webs come from a device on his wrists and a chemical he created himself). Peter must juggle his school work, his sick aunt, maintaining his secret identity, bad press, and the constant battles he faces as Spider-Man
