Question: Why can't Conan tell anybody who he really is? I saw the first episode but I must have missed where they explained why.

Answers: Why can't Conan tell anybody who he really is? I saw the first episode but I must have missed where they explained why.

It was explained in the second episode.
Jimmy (Shinichi) Kudo was discussing the situation with Dr. Agasa and had considered telling Rachel about his change but Dr. Agasa warned him that as long as the men who attempted to poison him were still out there anyone who knew of his continued extstence might come after him again.
So he adopted the name Conan Edogawa and remaind as an inconspicuous boy until the cure for the poison is found.
He also adopted the name to protect others around him, if the Black Organization got wind of his still being alive, anybody around him would be in danger.

i always thought it was so that the men who had been after him wouldnt know he was still around

Baked Goods is correct: Shinichi get's poisned from a "dark organization", he fears the revealing his true identity can endanger the people he loves the most (*cough* Ran), If the organization found out about his true identity they can return and kill Shinichi.
But do not fear, there are many instances where he is almost caught (which makes it interesting) I truly love the series and urge you to continue watching. Later in the series you'll meet the organization members, including an exmember who is also turned into a kid by the poision!

(And also they generally repeat how he turned into a kid and why in the beginning of the episodes)
