Not sure I guess he just wanted sword for his own gain/advantage.
As Lights Kira said he was training to become a legendary swordsman just like Zabuza,but never made it.
Every one of the 7 legendary swordsman had there own unique sword and each sword had its own ability. He probably wants to get all the swords and get all the swords so he can be the most powerful swordsmen the ever was.

You know.... I'm not really sure.
It could be possible that Suigetsu just really wanted the sword.
If I remember correctly, Suigetsu was training to become one of the 7 legendary swordsman (like Zabuza) but never actually became one... so it could be possible that he just wants more power.
I am pretty sure that the Kubikiri Houcho has something special about it. I know that it is seriously heavy.... Suigetsu would be at an advantage if he was able to attain that sword.
But of couse, all of the 7 legendary swordsmen had awesome swords (like Kisame's Samehada)... so if Suigetsu... or rather Hebi as a whole [Sasuke and his group] were to collect them all... they would be a formidable bunch.
Also, I think that Suigetsu just really loves strong swords. I believe he stated that in the manga at some point.....
