Why does Gaara's forehead say "love" on it?!

Question: I understand that the symbol on his forehead is both the Japanese and Chinese symbol for "love." What, if any, is the significance behind that. It wasn't there in the flashback episodes where it shows his younger self.

During the Gaara flashback, his uncle explained how love manages to heal a broken heart, then he tries to kill him saying that he would never be truly loved. Having never truly loved Gaara, Yashamaru, Gaara's uncle, hoped that killing him would avenge the death of his older sister, who had named Gaara after the phrase "a self loving carnage" (我を愛する修羅, Ware wo ai suru shura)
The symbol appeared on his head after the attack.
It's all there in the subtext.

yeah it was
if you listened carefully and understood it
it said that he was to love only himself
the part where it showed his mother in the sand
i don't really remember how it went
i think Naruto Uzumaki can tell you more

[edit] what did i tell you naruto uzumaki went and found the anser for u

thats the thing he's missing i life. after he killed his uncle, there wa no one who cared about him.

i think it was used for irony. Gaara felt love for his mother but instead of being nice he wanted to attack every one. if you ask me... that is serious irony ^^

You see the thing is that Gaara was love only really,by his mother and really not even that, even his mother never really love and his father too,as h even tried to kill Gaara more then once.

Since nobody really love Gaara,he had learned to love himself and only himself.

During his fight when he was a child,Gaara had always been out casted, but on that night his uncle try to kill him,but in the process only really killed himself because he set off bombs in order to kill Gaara, but the sand protected Gaara. Afterwords the demon in Gaara had been released and mark a word love on his head because the fact no one has before. Not even his uncle who cared for him had loved him. So,it is a reminder of his pain and him being unloved.

Naruto Rocks!!!!!

i remember it was in the flashback bu tmaybe not in the english dubbed version anywhoo...heres the reason behind it

so gaara finds out the only person who ever loved him (or so he thought) tried to kill him....after killing that person (his mom's brother) he uses the sand to make that kanjji for love on his head because he will only love himself and noone else will love him.....thats basically the reason he had one f**cked up child hoood lol

hope this helped^^

well iv'e been looking on internet and i think the word "gaara" mean hatred. so when put together means " i love to kill" or "i'm un-loved. the symbol came on his forehead....well kind of like how naruto has the symbol on his stomach. either that or garra put that on himself as a scar that symbolizes that he is un-loved.

because it's something he's never felt.....and me and Ody mean, his body along with the Shikaku....made it, using Gaara's blood...

HE HAD IT BECAUSE ON EPSODE 106 OR 107 HIS BABYSITTER TRIED TO KILL HIM.BECAUSE HIS FATHER TOLD HIM TO DO IT.THEN HE CAUGHT HIM BY A SAND COFFIN AND SQUEEZED HIS HAND AND SAID SAND BURIAL. THEN AFTER THAT HE TOOK OFF HIS MASK.AND SAW THAT IT WAS HIS BABYSITTER HE LOVED HIS BABYSITTER VERY MUCH AND THEN HIS BABYSITTER OPENED HIS JACKET.HAD ALOT OF PAPER BOMBS ON HIS STOMACH AND IT EXPLODED THEN GARRA STARTED TO CRY.THEN HIS SAND WENT TO HIS FOREHEAD AND MADE THE LOVE MARK BECAUSE HE LOVED HIS BABYSITTER VERY MUCH. AND THATS THE STORY BEHIND THE LOVE MARK ON GARRAS FOREHEAD.
