"I am Legend" was a novel written in 1954 by Richard Matheson.
In 1964, Matheson turned the novel into a screenplay for a movie which was titled "The Last Man on Earth"
"The Omega Man" was filmed in 1971.
And of course the recent Will Smith version with the original title and much truer to the novel than the "Omega Man" movie. So while Omega Man was based off the novel, limiting the vampiric elements, the current movie was not based off omega man but the original book.

I hear it's better than Omega-Man but then so are most of the HUGE box office remakes.
I Am Legend, is basically a remake of "I Am Omega" and no it's not the same man playing in both movies....
