Anime Fans: A Question About Anime in general?!
Question: Hi, Anime Fans *Waves*
This thought has been bugging me for a while. You know when you watch Anime and you have a favorite character(can be male of female) and you like that character because they are intelligent, funny, shy, good looking etc..My question is:How come almost all Animes I've seen has good looking people in Them. Also, do the Anime makers make them "Hot" or Good looking so that they can appeal to the audience. Almost every anime that I've seen has good looking people in them. Do you think that people watch certain Animes because of that "Hot" guy or girl?. Would An anime be "popular" if there wasn't good looking people in them?
I think What matters the most is the plot/story and how characters act and interact with each other.

Well, not all anime have good looking people, many other anime have people with relatively 'average' looking people. Of course these anime rely more stories and character interactions than visual, "Chibi Maruko-chan" (originially aimed at females age 30's and upward) is an example. And lets not forget the unique ones, like "TarePanda" and "AfroKen".
But just let be honest here, if you have the choice of between looking at good looking people and 'average' looking people, which one will you choose? Just remember we are not talking about personality here, just looks. Most definetly choose good looking people.
In general, anime aimed at youth (anyone below 30's-40's) and youth minded people always tend to have good looking people, since youth are more visual minded than older people.
The anime industry is a conservative industry, people in the industry rarely dare to anything different. People want to see good looking people, it's a fact and the industry serve that demand. Even in a show that have lots of 'average' looking characters, they most probably will still show at least one beautiful character.
Of course another, it's going to be a problem to be the 'good looking' character in a seas of good looking characters. Is the 'pretty girl' can still be called as 'bishoujo' ("pretty girl"), or would she need to be called as 'chou 'bishoujo' ("super pretty girl") to differentate her from the other 'bishoujo'. I mean many my favorite characters are the 'pretty one', the problem is that the people around them are also relatively good looking.
As for people watch people watch certain animes because of that certain boy or girl.
Ahem... it's not a matter of opinion if people did do this or not, it's a FACT that many anime are indeed promote certain boys and girls as their attractive features (the other features are usually songs and mechas, preferably transforamble ones).
Many anime have their own idols, either story wise or series wise.
Many voice actors/actresses are even the reason some people watch certain anime.
As for what matters the most is the plot/story and how characters act and interact with each other.
Well, many just skip the anime and instead just buy the figures, the posters, the telephone cards, and so on of the anime.
I mean, why bother exhaust yourself of watching the entire "Kido Senshi Gundam Seed", when you instead can just buy a poster or a figure of Lacus Clyne? You don't even need to watch the entire series, just certain episodes with Lacus Clyne in them.
Shin Seiki Evangelion is notorious for its merchandises related to Rei, Asuka, Misato, and so on. You wouldn't even know that its main protagonist is Shinji judging by the range of merchandises.
In short, the TV anime version is just a commercial in a half hour time slot. You don't even need to watch the commercial (either the normal ones or the 'half hour' ones)!
The line 'I don't know who is this figure I bought was based on, I heard she's from an anime series' probably are often said.
You could even buy stuff of illustrated characters that aren't even from any manga or anime or video game, like Fastech-tan who was based on the Fastech 360 Shinkansen.
The force of 'moe' is strong. "Midori no Hibi" and other anime even parody this phenomena.
What I like in many anime (especially older ones) is that there's relatively almost no 'popular girl is bad' cliche, while the 'mean girl' cliche do exist, the 'popular girl' tend to be relatively always a good girl type character, even if she's a little bit 'naughty'.
They tend to use the 'cinderella' type story, of the protagonist meeting his/her princess/prince charming (the popular boy/girl).
"Ultra Maniac" is an example of it, the protagonist is a popular girl having a crush on the popular boy. Even when the popular boy is revealed not as 'nice' as his image, he's still relatively a good boy type character that was so stressed out of guarding his 'nice boy' image.
An anime version of "Ugly Betty" probably will be much closer to the originial Venezuela version than the USA version, one thing for sure its Betty is most probably just a badly dressed individual and not really 'ugly'.
No one wants to watch an anime where the characters are ugly. They don't seem cool if they arent good looking.

Well I know the reason I watch is for the story and a hot guy! I mean I think that the story has a lot to do with it and I don't want to watch a show with ugly characters in it ya know.
i know, i thought about the same thing, its very true that there are hot or good looking guys in every freakin anime, i think that they do it on purpose so girls like us will "fall in love" with the character and keep watching the anime

Yes, one example would Ookiku Furikabutte, a baseball anime, it's so awesome. I think it's even better than Prince of Tennis w/o the bishies.. The story line is great, I just simply love it!!! I kept watching the episodes over and over and over.. well you get it..^^

Most anime lovers do search for good animation, but in my opinion a great story line would be the best priority.
Very good question. I mean it. Well, I believe they do this in order to help gather audiences attention and make more people watch the show.That is what i believe.
Ok, first of all in Japan the people over all are a lot, LOT skinnier than the average American. It would only make since then for anime characters to draw them skinny. And as far as being "ugly" most of the things that I would consider ugly are often cleared up by lack of detail in anime drawings. Stuff like acne and bad teeth aren't shown in animation because skin is usally all just one color (with maybe some shading).
When you start taking this stuff into consideration- most characters do start looking bad. Seriously, take the hottest character you know, and add some acne or ANY form of blemish, and they start looking uglier.
well, when i'm looking for a new anime to watch, i usually check out pictures. If the characters look cool and interesting, then i start watching. THEN, if the plot is really fun or exciting and if the way the characters act are lovable then i continue watching. ^^ So, i think how the characters look is useful in getting attention, but the storyline and plot is REALLY important in maintaining someone's attention.
For me it's a little hard to explain. In a sense one reason I watch anime is because of how the characters look, but it's more about the art for me. The anime has to have a good plot/story line of course, but also good art. Mainly because I'm an artist so I'm interested in the art, how the characters look and all the surroundings in the anime. However, when the art is good the characters are usually good looking. It just turns out that way. :)
That's how it is for me anyway. :)
It's easier to draw attractive, young people. It also makes more people watch. It inherently adds sexual tension. It makes the art appear more stylish.
And most importantly, why not? Would you prefer reading manga about ugly people? Fiction is fiction. And as Oscar Wilde would say, If you can't look good doing it, why bother?
You know I thought the exact same thing about the animes too!
I mean why do they always have to look better than life? I mean can't they have average people as the main character?
But then you know they do the same thing in alot of movies! The main character can often be handsome or beautiful. But you know sometimes these characters suit the plot of the story. But I still think it should be more about the story than the charaters beauty.
I think the plot/story matters the most ^_^
aside from the good looking guys as you said, as long as the story/plot are good i'll continue watching the anime =P
Hm… Some people do watch anime with bad drawing.
Gazillion people watch Naruto.. In my opinion it don’t have a typical good looking character… Well the fans do say something like (example) Sasuke is hot, but he’s nothing, compared to lets say Kuchiki Byakuya from Bleach or Shirou Kamui from X/1999.
But I think… Yeah… Most of the anime fans, especially girls (myself included) often watch anime based on their looks….
