no, because renji's goal is to match byakuya what i mean is since rukia was adopted by a noble family, renji wanted to match or surpass byakuya so that somehow, he can reach rukia's status and not feel awkward.

No, more like he should step up a bit and do things his way and not like Ikkaku's. Even though Ikkaku is a 3rd seat in 12th squad, his fighting experience is more than Renji's. Renji wants to be stronger and has gone to Ikkaku for help. Ikkaku trained him for awhile. And Renji does get better. But Renji being a Lieutenant begs a 3rd seat for more training. And Ikkaku says he needs to learn to fight his own style. And by the way, Renji doesn't feel that way for Rukia...or does he?
Without re-watching the sequence again it is difficult to pin point in what context they were talking about.
