Hmm, perhaps CardCaptor Sakura or Sailor Moon?

They both have to do with magic girls and are similar to Tokyo Mew Mew and Mermaid Melody.

Or, you could try Fruits Basket.

(These three animes are some of my favorites!)

CardCaptor Sakura:
Ten-year-old fourth grader Sakura Kinomoto opens a mysterious book in her father's study and accidentally lets loose the magical Clow Cards. By her ability to open the seal, Sakura is revealed to have special powers, and it becomes her responsibility to retrieve the missing cards.
The task involves finding each card, battling its magical personification, and sealing it away. She is assisted by Cerberus (Kerberos, also known as Kero-chan), the Beast of the Seal assigned to protect the cards, who was asleep when Sakura opened the Clow Book (He was on a "nap" at the time, which lasted 30 years). Kero, who looks like an animated plush toy throughout most of the series (his "borrowed" form), guides Sakura as she develops her Cardcaptor powers. In the first episode, he presents her with the Key of the Seal, which allows her to fight and capture the Clow Cards. It's 70 episodes with two movies.

Sailor Moon:
The protagonist of Sailor Moon is Usagi Tsukino, who lives as an ordinary middle school girl until she is found by a talking cat named Luna. Through Luna, Usagi learns that the world is about to be attacked by a Dark Kingdom that had appeared once before, long ago, and destroyed the kingdom of the moon. Her dormant powers are then awakened to defend the Earth against the coming onslaught, and she is led to a number of friends who join her in the battle.
Usagi fights using the identity of Sailor Moon, and as the story progresses she learns more and more about the enemies which face her and the evil force that is sending them. Gradually she discovers the truth about her own past life, her destined true love, and the possibilities for the future of the Solar System. It has 200 episodes and 3 movies. It's one of my personal favorites. =)

Fruits Basket:
Fruits Basket follows the life of high-school student Tohru Honda, who was recently orphaned when her mother, Kyoko Honda, died in a car accident. After that, Tohru lived with her grandfather, but when his house needs remodeling, Tohru resorts to living in a tent in a forest and holds down a job to support herself. Despite suffering many hardships, Tohru remains optimistic.
One day, Tohru comes upon a house in the forest that is the home of her classmate Yuki Sohma and his older cousin Shigure Sohma. When the Sohmas discover that Tohru is living in a tent, they are quite surprised by her inner strength. The entire area is Sohma property, and Tohru asks to be allowed to stay in her tent (affectionately dubbed "her castle"). Feeling sorry for her and desperate to end their bachelor days of filthy living conditions, the Sohmas offer her their spare room in exchange for cooking and housework. After a landslide buries her tent, including her mother's picture and school clothes, she has no option but to accept. Soon after she moves in, Kyo Sohma comes to challenge Yuki.
Tohru soon discovers the Sohma family's secret, and the reason why Yuki is so private and secretive at school: thirteen members of the family are possessed by the 12 animal spirits of the Chinese Zodiac (jyūnishi in Japanese) plus the spirit of the cat who was, according to legend, left out of the Zodiac. They transform into animals when hugged by the opposite sex or when put under a great deal of emotional or physical stress (such as being sick). When she promises to keep their secret, the Sohmas allow Tohru to keep her memories rather than hypnotically erasing them, a fate that had previously befallen anyone not "Inside" the Sohma family who had discovered the secret.
The story follows the lives of Tohru and the Sohma family, as they deal with each other and a society where neither quite fits in, as well as the feared Akito Sohma, head of the Sohma family. Soon, after living with the Sohma family she began to like, then love, all of the Sohmas, and sets out to break the zodiac curse. It only has 26 episodes but is very good.

Hope I helped. Will be willing to suggest more if you want. Just ask, alright?

Best of Luck,
Victoria

Also, all these summaries deal with the JAPANESE SUBBED versions. I'd recommend those instead of English dubbed on these. =)

go for the most popular mahou shojo-Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailormoon(if u can stand old animation lol)

kamichama karin and shugo chara are good too.
Others:
Pretty Cure
Pretear(Snow White based)
Fullmoon Wo Sagashite
Nanoha

^^

Try Magical DoReMi, Sailormoon and Saint Tail. But, DO NOT watch Wedding Peach, it's a total ripoff of Sailormoon>

Sailor Moons a good one - has lot of story arcs so has lot of episodes to watch, though it gets kinda violent/more mature in the later arcs so not sure if you should be seeing those. the first couple arcs though are really good =]

Cardcaptor Sakura is sooo cute, especially later on when you see a crush/young love thing developing between the two main characters (both in middle school)
