Sasuke left the village so he could go to Orochimaru to obtain more power. Sasuke began to believe that Konoha and all of his "friends" were making him weak. So he left the village and tried to break all his bonds. He also wanted to go to Orochimaru because Orochimaru had promised him unimaginable power -- enough to defeat Itachi.
Sasuke comes back Naruto Shippuden episode 51.
[Edit] When I mean he comes back in episode 51 -- I mean that's the first time you SEE him for an entire episode. As to when he come's back to Konoha - he hasn't done so yet in the manga or the anime.

every one who has answered this question knows nothing of naruto he left to gain power to defeat itachi and he never comes back to konoha he just comes back into the story in shippuden he has already defeated itachi well in the process of defeating him at least I'm reading the manga and so far sasuke has gotten pretty strong he has many new jutsu having been trained by orochimaru during his time away from konoha after he found he had nothing left to learn from orochimaru he killed him so now orochimaru is dead and he left to find itachi they fought sasuke proved really strong and was kind of winning but itachi started to use his ninjutsu and became to strong sasuke ran out of chakara and just as itachi was about to pluck out sasuke's eyes he feel over fainted or he is dead tomorrow we will know which of the two has happened but basically he pushed himself to hard to beat sasuke
his coming back in chapter 120 he left to gain more power to deafeat his brother
he killed itachi in naruto manga chapter 393
he leave the village for seekin power to get his revenge with his brother...he also get annoyed coz his counterpart, naruto, who he seek as a weak guy is develop far more stronger than him, (rasengan vs chidori at hospital) and also when gaara act...and he will come back after naruto shippuuden...as in manga referred as chapter 2..
He left cuz he wanted more power....all he does is look for power, power & even more power.
and i dont think he's coming back to the village anytime soon....especially after what happened with his bro..\

Well, I have to say that I HATE SASUKE. He is so stupid!!!! He left everything behind, even his friends, just to "gain power"!!!! He is so gay too!!!
Sasuke is not emo, gay or dumb....and he is not weak...he's pretty powerful....but not enough....but it's now....back then when he left the village he was weak....even weaker the Naruto...that's why he left ...to gain power to defeat Itachi....

P. S. No matter what happened in 393, no matter what some people say like Sasuke has finally got his revenge....In my opinion...he's still "foolish( not dumb) little brother"....he's not match for Itachi....If Itachi hadn't collapsed ( whatever it was)....he would've won...We don't know the reason yet...but I'm sure Sasuke has nothing to do with it...
He doesn't come back yet...but he meets his teammates again in Naruto Shippuden 51 which has just aired today in Japan.....
He thought that he was weak.
( who wouldn't if your brother hits you every time you meet to a pathetic mess of meat and than says "You're weak, you lack hatred")
He had the idea that he wouldn't get any stronger in konoha. In the chunin examns he was bitten by orochimaru, who said that if he wanted more power, he should come to him.
Sasuke got a taste of of orochimarus power and wanted more.
So he dicided to go to orochimaru to become stronger for his revenge.
I think he didn't really want to leave, he just had to. (little voices in his head ^_~ )
I'm reading the manga and i thing that after he'll have his revenge, he'll go back to Konoha. I'm not sure though if he'll kill Itachi. Maybe he has a good explenation and they'll live happy ever after....
btw, in episode 51 shippuden he's back again. Today it's on air!!!

Sasuke left Konoha due to his greed for power and his lust for revenge. He saw Konoha as a hindrance to his desires and a source of weakness. Wherein it served only as a comforter but never really a source of strength. Unlike Orochimaru which offered him power and satisfied his hunger for power.
Sasuke returns at Naruto Shippuden wherein in episode one he made a minor appearance. Then as the story progresses he slowly showed up in the LATTER part of the series
i heard he does come back in shippuden after seing sakura heal naruto from a inch away from death after he kills orochimaru and finally realises friendships good =)
