The movie takes place after Sango and Miroku appear (not to mention Rin as well) and before Hakudoushi appears, but it's a spin-off movie that acts more like a separate episode.
You don't even need to watch the tv series to understand the plot. However, if you look closely, you'll see that Sesshomaru has his left arm in the movie when everyone knows Inuyasha cut it off in one of the first episodes of the tv series.
