the line with a circle below it and another line below that is meant to look like an old camper style lantern. Same symbol on his ring.
It is a green lantern. If it were red, they would have to change the name.
Think of the Green Arrow, he is named after a traffic light.
It actually looked much more like a lantern in Green Lantern's earlier years, but comic book artists made it more simplistic. Now, many people say it is a ring, but in actuality was still meant to look like a simple lantern (the empty space in the middle is the glow). The reason many people believe it to be a ring is that it is the ring that gives the Green Lantern his powers, but he must 'recharge' that ring on the magic lantern which he (in later comics, was a group of heroes that possessed it rather then 1) had to touch the ring to it to recharge.

First green lantern was alan scott who used metal to create himself a green ring. Then, the first green lantern from the green lantern corp hal jordan.
Kyle Rayner had three different variation of the lantern. One when he first appeared. Second when he updated his costume, during dale eaglesham run, then that ion look after jade died. I hate what they did to kyle, at least DC could give him a good design. Or at least revert to the design he had during Dale eaglesham and judd winick run. I don't think people liked the idea of the symbol being an actual light being projected, but I think that changed once Ethan Van Scriver embraced it.
I can tell with a hundred percent that the guardians of the universe are based on the look of a real person!!!!
The Guardians of the universe is based on the image of the first Prime Minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion. True story. They look very much alike.
