I'm looking for a good new comic book series?!

Question: I used to have subscriptions to a few superhero comics when I was a kid, but I kinda grew out of it. Recently I've been wanting to get into a new one. Something relatively new, like within the past year. I'm looking for something geared towards older reader in the vein of 30 Days of Night. Blood is a plus, guts are cool, swearing is alright by me, and I'm not really into superhero books like xmen anymore, although if it was really good I'd consider one. I like a good story, and not-terrible art.

Sorry, deepseaberserker, comics and anime have to share a section for the moment, but we've been trying to get that changed. I don't hate on anime fans, but when they can't even be bothered to read a question long enough to recognize the asker is talking about American comics and not Japanese ones, well, I wish they would shut up, too.

Anyway, I gotta million recommendations for you. I would suggest reading Vertigo comics.

Vertigo is the Mature Readers line of DC comics. Nearly every title published under it is in a self-contained universe (so you don't have to worry about Superman or somebody showing up, or what may have happened before) and nearly every series is designed to come to a conclusion at some point. They've been publishing easily the best line of comics for the past 10 years, and have won award after award after award.

On DC's website, they'll let you read online for free the first issue of many of these series so you can get a taste for them and see if they're to your liking. You can find those here
http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?...

And I'll give you a brief run-down of some of my favorite Vertigo series. Please check out the free reads of issue #1 at the link above if these sound interesting to you.

Transmetropolitan - "After years of self-imposed exile from a civilization rife with degradation and indecency, cynical journalist Spider Jerusalem is forced to return to a job that he hates and a city that he loathes. Working as an investigative reporter for the newspaper The Word, Spider attacks the injustices of his surreal 21st Century surroundings. Combining black humor, life-threatening situations, and moral ambiguity, this book is the first look into the mind of an outlaw journalist and the world he seeks to destroy. "

Y-The Last Man - "When a plague of unknown origin instantly kills every mammal with a Y chromosome, unemployed and unmotivated slacker Yorick Brown suddenly discovers that he is the only male left in a world inhabited solely by women. Accompanied by his mischievous monkey and the mysterious Agent 355, Yorick embarks on a transcontinental journey to find his girlfriend and discover why he is the last man on Earth. But with a gang of feminist extremists and the leader of the Israel Defense Forces hunting him, Yorick's future, as well as that of the human race, may be short-lived. "

Preacher - "Merging with a bizarre spiritual force called Genesis, Preacher Jesse Custer becomes completely disillusioned with the beliefs that he had dedicated his entire life to. Now possessing the power of the word, an ability to make people do whatever he utters, Custer begins a violent and riotous journey across the country. Joined by his girlfriend Tulip and the hard drinking Irish vampire Cassidy, the Preacher loses faith in both man and God as he witnesses dark atrocities and improbable calamities during his exploration of America."

Fables - Hundreds of years ago, all the fairy tale characters you know and love - Snow White, Prince Charming, the Big Bad wolf, and more - were forced out of their homeworlds when an unknown villain named the Adversary gathered an army and swept across their homelands. Those who could escaped to the real "mundane" world where they have been living in secret in New York as immortals trying to find a way to win back their worlds. Inventive and very fun, one of my favorite series right now.

100 Bullets - "In this dark and intriguing crime noir series, the mysterious Agent Graves approaches ordinary citizens and gives them an opportunity to exact revenge on a person that has wronged them. Offering his clients an attaché case containing proof of the deed and a gun, he guarantees his "clients" full immunity for all of their actions, including murder."

Sandman - "THE SANDMAN, written by New York Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman, was the most acclaimed comic book title of the 1990s. A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, THE SANDMAN is also widely considered one of the most original and artistically ambitious series of the modern age. By the time it concluded in 1996, it had made significant contributions to the artistic maturity of comic books and become a pop culture phenomenon in its own right. "
