In theory, it shouldn't matter where you start, but comic books are becoming less and less reader friendly and I would hate to be a new reader trying to figure out the Marvel Universe. You might want to order one or two of the "Essentials" volumes, which are black and white reprints of one Marvel title (Essential Avengers, for example), but if you read the twenty or so stories in an essential volume and then tried to follow contemporaty continuity, you would be lost with most characters. The problems really isn't the accumulation of so much history, the real problem is the accumulation of so many radical changes over the years.
The suggestion to read about Marvel Characters via Wikipedia and www.marvel isn't bad at all, and is certainly the cheapest way to figure out which title(s) you might like to follow. Just be aware that Marvel is showing signs of desperation and any given series may suddenly undergo radical changes at any time.
Start out with superman
Move up to batman
Iron man
wonderwoman, superman
The shield
youre fine from there on.
Read the dates and buy the oldest one.
There are plenty of comic book specialty stores, you can also try milehighcomics.com if you want to buy back issues. You may also try looking up their entries in wikipedia.com. They are surprisingly up to date on storylines. I think the Civil War storyline is a great place for a new reader to start. Or you could try something from Marvel's Ultimate line. There are over forty years of storytelling so I can be easy to get lost. Try their own site, it may help. Have a great weekend.
