because light, who praised himself on not being arrogant, was too arrogant and wanted to be the "winner" at the end. if he wouldnt have said "Near, its my win!" at the end he prolly could have went on and ruled the world.
personally, i agree with matsuda in the end of the manga (his theory)
and i wish light would have won (and that matsuda would have lived, i love his comic relief!!)
kira dies cuz in the end he thought he was a god. and he wasnt. i think if kira wouldve lived the world would have been his perfect utopia for a while then total chaos. thats just me tho. ;P
