Does any anime music even come close to Joe Hisaishi?!
Question: When it comes to movie soundtracks, I really don't think so. He's done more than anyone I've heard of. That alone gives him an advantage. Plus, everything he does is amazing ^^
Compared to anime series . . . that's another story.
Yoko Kanno is up there for her work with The Seatbelts on Cowboy Bebop. Taku Iwasaki is also, he's done many great anime soundtracks (Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, Now and Then Here and There, Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann). If I had to choose anyone, it would be Toshio Masuda for the Mushishi soundtracks
None of them are as consistent with their works overall than Hisaishi is though
