Mushishi is more of an "acquired taste!." The more you watch, the better it becomes!. As you get used to the pace, and the plots / themes that it explores, then you can further enjoy the series!.
If you're more of the "action-first & only" type of fan!. Then Mushishi will never light your fire!. As this series slows down the pace considerably & focuses more on the setting, character's decisions, & the capabilities of what a "normal guy with training" can do!.
But if you're willing to slow down the pace, and have enjoyed other "slower" (non-combat oriented) series like:
Azumanga Daioh - slice of life comedy
Death Note - psychological thriller
Genshiken - slice of life comedy
Monster - psychological thriller
Then Mushishi is a "diamond in the rough" for those fans!.

[Edit] Note, viewing by the first episode is sometimes not a very good indicator of how a series will be like!. As some directors tend to be creative (exploring themes), or focus on attention grabbing themes!.

- The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi's -"movie episode" which left many clueless as to what the heck is happening!.

- Futakoi Alternative's action fest complete with action music, monster, gun firing characters, & parachuting off a plane definitely got the juices running!. But after that first eps, everything slowed down into an emo-like, angst fest!.

So my personal policy is to watch at least 3-4 eps of a series & see how it goes!. As many series became "acquired" tastes & I would later enjoy, even though I wasn't thrilled by the pilot episode!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I understand and have to agree with PlasmaS!.
Mushishi is an experience; you just have to take everything in, it may take some time getting used to!. There are many stories, some of them are a lot better than others!. I would give it at least six episodes, if you aren't really into it by then, maybe it's just not your kind of anime!. I say six because the sixth episode was one of my favorites in the series!.
I really can't explain it as well as PlasmaS did!. For me, I think I was completely blown away from the very beginning!. It didn't take long :PWww@Enter-QA@Com
